This isn't the first time I actually experienced this, but oh gosh, I can never get over how much difference the right background can make to a photomanipulation work.
So to everyone who's making a photomanip that doesn't seem to work out, don't give it up yet! Try changing the background~ 
My next artwork will likely be a scenery photomanip or scenery... painting. Can't wait to get started this coming weekend.
